Conveyors in Aluminum Recycling Plant

Application Description

An aluminum recycling company needs to monitor their conveyors for the first sign of trouble. The indicator for this is when a conveyor slows due to unwanted load increase. The conveyors run at 1,200 RPM. Rather than being notified only when a conveyor stalls, the supervisor wants to know when the speed has dropped to 800 RPM.

Solution 1:  Phares ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor

Mount a Phares Magnetic Disk and a Phares ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor to the load side of the conveyor. Wire the ZS09P Zero Speed Switch contacts in series with the conveyor “Stop” circuit. Set the ZS09P Zero Speed Switch relay setpoint at 800 RPM. When a stoppage occurs, the ZS09P Zero Speed Switch responds in approximately 0.075 seconds, enabling the “Stop” circuit on the conveyor. Down time and clean up are reduced significantly by the early detection. The ZS09P Zero Speed Switch needs a target for sensing and measuring speed.

Solution 2:  Phares T6 Tachometer System

Mount a Phares Magnetic Disk and a Phares Digital Output Hall Effect Sensor to the load side of the conveyor. Wire the Phares Digital Output Hall Effect Sensor to a Phares T6 Tachometer. Set the Phares T6 Tachometer Relay 1 setpoint at 800 RPM and wire Relay 1 to the conveyor stop circuit. Set Relay 2 setpoint at 1,000 RPM and wire Relay 2 to an alarm beacon. When conveyor speed slows to 1,000 RPM, the alarm beacon will indicate that the conveyor speed has slowed, alerting the supervisor that shut down may be about to occur. Attention can be given to the conveyor to attempt to determine the reason for the under speed condition.

The Phares T6 Tachometer monitors speed in four different ways:

  • The Phares T6 Tachometer has a digital display for visual speed indication.
  • Relay outputs controlled via speed setpoints enable the conveyor motor “stop” circuit and also enable an alarm beacon.
  • 4-20mA and 0-10V feedback signals provide real-time speed monitoring.

Early detection improves production by stopping a problem before it stops you.
